The Dunkirk Carnival — a unique tradition
The Dunkirk Carnival is one of the largest in France, second only to Nice. It runs from January to March, with bands every Sunday — mass processions of thousands of costumed revellers parading through the streets to the sound of brass bands.
The most iconic event is the main Dunkirk band, which draws tens of thousands of people on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday. It winds through the town centre, culminating in the famous herring throw from the town hall balcony — a centuries-old tradition where the mayor and councillors toss herrings into the jubilant crowd below.
The tradition dates back to the 17th century, when ship owners threw a farewell party for fishermen before their departure to sea. Today it draws visitors from all over France and Europe.

Properties are snapped up 3–6 months ahead for the main band weekends. Don't wait.
Plan your costume
Fancy dress is a must. The colourful outfits with the iconic floral hat (schlaeger) are part of the tradition.
Getting around
The tram connects the Citadelle to the town centre in 10 min. Leave the car behind on band days — the centre becomes pedestrian-only.
Band dates
Dates are published every year in September–October on the official carnival website. Plan as soon as they're announced.

How far are the apartments from the town centre and the bands?
Our apartments are in the Citadelle district, roughly 10–15 minutes on foot from Dunkirk town centre where the bands take place. The tram also connects the two in around 10 minutes.
How do I book an apartment for the Carnival?

Do I need to wear a costume at the Dunkirk Carnival?
